As we continue our blog series on New Product Development, this post covers creating a proprietary product line. In particular, creating a proprietary product line from the perspective of a custom manufacturer.

Our team at Falconer Electronics takes deep pride in helping our clients to create, produce and deliver new products. We work closely and relentlessly with our clients to manufacture products as close to perfect as possible.

The prototype and test phase are both so critical to strive for perfection during early stages when developing a new product. Critical factors include quality and safety as well as producing your product at a competitive price.

Many custom manufacturers make products for other companies but do not possess a proprietary product line themselves. Typically it is not a priority. Custom manufacturers are just too busy serving existing customers.

Over time, a small custom manufacturer develops the skills and expertise at a proprietary process. Yet, they lack either engineering or a product design team to develop a proprietary product line of their own.

Another challenge faced includes not only developing the product but also possessing the ability to aggressively market the product as well. Creating a steady sales channel makes or breaks a product. The greatest product without revenue is simply nothing more than well-kept secret.

Proprietary Product Line at Falconer Electronics

Well, we found it necessary to not just talk the talk with developing a new product for our customers. We also have to walk the walk. So we created our own proprietary product line.

Falconer Electronics offers a variety of proprietary products.

The list includes:

Creating our own proprietary line of products delivers tremendous benefits to our customers. Especially when working with clients developing their own proprietary product line.

For example, we use our own Wire Harness Assemblies and Printed Circuit Boards in our products.

This simply strengthens our company on many levels. This creates deeper experience with our staff, increases buying power with our vendors and helps maximize capacity with our equipment and machinery.

Since launching our e-commerce store with our proprietary product line, we have engaged with new customers in exciting industries that were completely new to us.

Let’s take a look at the proprietary product line that we developed over the years.

 Ground Straps

Our team produces thousands upon thousands of high quality Braided Ground Straps for OEM’s.  Way too many to count since our humble beginnings in 1985. In hindsight, we should have kept track similar to McDonald’s tracking the number of burgers served.

Anyway, we decided to convert this proprietary process into a proprietary product line of ground straps.

To broaden the line, we also offer the opportunity to create an Instant Ground Strap for customers looking for a custom size. We call it the Ground Strap Express (CLICK HERE). This allows a customer to build a Ground Strap to the exact dimensions necessary to complete a project.

Commercial Power Strips

Our proprietary product line of commercial power strips developed out of a need for one of our largest customers. Lowe’s approached Falconer Electronics two years ago to manufacturer a Heavy Duty Industrial Power Strip for artificial Christmas tree displays. The project required a tight deadline along with safety certification from ETL.

The project was such a success for our company that we now offer these Commercial Power Strips on our e-commerce store. Since launching this new proprietary line of power strips in January, we have engaged with numerous new customers in completely new markets for our company.Proprietary Product Line

Industrial Magnets

Heavy Duty Industrial Magnets

Falconer Electronics offers its signature line of Heavy Duty Industrial Magnets exclusively online. Customers love using our magnets in industrial settings. Each magnet is produced with a coating that is corrosion and temperature resistant. Falconer Electronics Signature Industrial Magnets are exclusively produced in the USA at our manufacturing facility. Also, we back up every magnet with our 1 Year Product Guarantee.

Magnets are produced from raw magnet material and then enclosed in epoxy or urethane. The raw material of these Heavy Duty Industrial Magnets consists of either ceramic or neodymium.

Neo what, you ask? Let’s dig a little deeper into each raw magnet. We turn to the Magnet Materials Producers Association and the Standard Specifications for Permanent Magnet Materials for a thorough explanation:

Ceramic Magnets

“Ceramic magnets are generally formed by a compression or extrusion molding technique which is then followed by sintering. Finish grinding or shaping, when necessary for better control of dimensions, is normally done by using diamond grinding wheels. The material to be molded can be in either a dry powder or wet slurry form. Magnetic performance can be increased in a preferred direction by applying a magnetic field in that direction during the molding process.”

Neodymium Magnets

“The rare earth magnet alloys are usually formed by powder metallurgical processes. The magnetic performance of all grades is optimized by applying a magnetic field during the pressing operation, thus producing a preferred direction of magnetization. Pressing and aligning techniques can substantially vary the degree of orientation and the residual induction (Br) of the finished magnet.”

Magnetic Work Lights

These magnets have multiple uses. All Falconer Electronics Magnetic Work Lights come equipped with our rugged and durable magnets.  The line of Magnetic Work Lights includes Fluorescent Lights, Magnetic Spot Lights, and Magnetic Trouble Lights.

J100-03M Magnetic Amber LED Mining Light

Here at Falconer Electronics, providing our customers with quality products that can get the job done is paramount. That’s why we are so proud to announce that all of our LED Flashing Signal Lamps are MSHA Approved.  The purpose of this article is to illustrate the importance of the MSHA Approval.

J100-03M Magnetic Amber LED Mining Light

What Does MSHA Mean?

In order to explain why the MSHA Approval on Falconer Electronics LED Flashing Signal Lamps is so important, you should understand what MSHA is.  MSHA stands for Mining Safety and Health Administration; it’s the governing body that oversees the safety and health of miners within the industry.  (Basically, it’s like OSHA, but specifically for the mining industry.)  If you are interested in a deeper explanation of this organization, please read this article, “MSHA or OSHA,” by Michael T. Heenan, from Pit & Quarry.

Ensuring that products can withstand the pressures of mine work is incredibly important. Mines are different environments than any other place on Earth and require that special attention is given to those environments.  Product failures at the wrong time could put miners in danger, so MSHA provides an “Approval” process.

What Happens When a Product is MSHA Approved?

According to the official MSHA website, approved products receive, “official notification by MSHA that product under consideration meets the applicable 30 CFR Requirements.”  Additionally, MSHA Approval ensures products are, “not likely explosion hazard under normal operation when used in methane-air atmosphere or coal dust.”  This, “typically does not include performance requirements with several exceptions (e.g., methane detectors and cap lamps)”

How Did the LED Flashing Signal Lamps Get MSHA Approval?

For Falconer Electronics, LED Flashing Signal Lamps to have completed the Approval process, MSHA needed to ensure that these products met the General Requirement under 30 CFR.  (The MSHA rules are in Title 30 of the CFR (Code of Federal Regulations), Mineral Resources, Chapter I, which you can view in its entirety here.)

Here are the General Requirements:

The following information comes directly from the publication listed above, which may get updated, as conditions change.  Please refer to the Official CFR for the most up-to-date information.

  1. The lamps shall be durable in construction, practical in operation, and suitable for the service for which they are designed and approved.
  2. The intensity of light, distribution of light, and battery capacity shall be adequate for the use for which the lamp is intended.
  3. Battery terminals and leads therefrom, as well as the battery gas vents, shall be designed to minimize corrosion of the electrical contacts.
  4. Bulbs and other replacement parts of the lamps shall be adequately marked as a means of identification.
Now What?

Once a product has been MSHA approved, it means that the company receives, “A formal document issued by MSHA which states that a completely assembled product has met the applicable requirements and which authorizes the attachment of an approval plate.”

J100-01 Red LED Mining Light - MSHA Approval

This MSHA Approval also means that our customers, especially those in the mining industry, can rest assured that our LED Flashing Signal Lamps are high quality and can stand up to the pressures of mine work.  As stated previously, here at Falconer Electronics, providing our customers with quality products that can get the job done is paramount. We are proud to offer MSHA approved products and to support the safety of miners every day.
